This wise Chinese proverb has been delicately carved onto slate, with exuberant, plant like flourishes, which have then been highlighted in white. Subtle gold highlights mark the space between each word.

About the artist

Emi Gordon began her calligraphy training in 1995 in Tokyo. After attending Thomas Ingmire’s workshop the following year, she decided to learn calligraphy overseas. Upon completing her preparation period of 2 years, she moved to England in 1997, and attended Roehampton University’s calligraphy degree course. After graduating from the course in 2001, she became a pupil at one of the countries leading letter-cutting studios, The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop in Cambridge, where she worked for 4 ½ years.
