The Harriet Frazer Bursary

A bursary  designed to help people with their career in the lettering arts.

The Harriet Frazer Bursary was established in 2015 by the Trustees to honour the achievements of the charity’s founder, Harriet Frazer MBE, on her retirement. The bursary is designed to help people starting a career in letter carving, and established letter carvers to progress their careers. The scope of the bursary is kept as broad as possible so that we can consider each applicant on his or her own merit.

Josephine Crossland

Josephine Crossland used her bursary to attend John Neilson’s drawing and carving workshop. She also received calligraphy tuition from Ieuan Rees one of the UK’s leading calligraphy artists.

"Thanks to the HFB award, I have been able to spend time with the well-respected calligrapher and letter carver Ieuan Rees, at his workshop in South Wales… I feel so much more confident and relaxed when it comes to drawing lettering."

Ayako Furano had 15 hours of calligraphy lessons with Rosella Garavaglia and bought specialist calligraphy nibs to enable her to continue to work in her studio.

"Rosella has been fantastic and the calligraphy has really helped me to understand and see letterforms in a different way."
