Torc by Maia Gaffney-Hyde

Torc by Maia Gaffney-Hyde

£420.00

20 x 20 x cm Maltese Limestone

Maia is the tenth LAT apprentice, and she is in her second year of training. She says:

‘The second piece I completed as part of my LCAT apprenticeship with Charlotte Howarth, this piece offered the opportunity to experiment with a more sculptural letterform, carving the letters in low relief in soft lime stone, as opposed to v-cutting. I was invited to contribute this piece to an exhibition showcasing the work of recipients of LCAT funding held at City and Guilds in the spring of 2023.

My starting points were sketches I had made at the Norwich Castle Museum. I was particularly drawn to the abstract yet minimal forms of objects from the Iceni period, in particular the twisting form of torcs. The letterforms of this piece are extrapolated from the negative shapes within the twists of a torc. The chosen word ‘torc’ has no great meaning but I have tried to align the form of the word with the object it is in reference to, an Iceni torc, by overlapping the letters there is a suggestion of a spiralling or twisting form.’

All funds raised from the sale of this piece go towards supporting Maia’s second year of apprenticeship.
